The first golf courses in Morocco were built for private enjoyment by the Pashas and the diplomats who flocked to Morocco in the early days of the French Protectorate, around 1912. In a very short amount of time, golfing became quite popular and courses were constructed all over the country. There are more than 3 dozen courses around Morocco, including several golf clubs and resorts.
Morocco is similar to California, with thousands of miles of coast along the Atlantic and Mediterranean, the Sahara desert and the High Atlas Mountains. It is picturesque and a divine mix of ancient Berber culture, Arab culture and European culture.
Whether you prefer a challenge, private lessons or stunning views, you will find a huge variety of jewels to choose from. Perhaps the most prestigious golf course in Morocco is the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, designed by Robert Trent Jones, opened in 1972. There are annual tournaments, and the club is visited by VIPs from around the world.
For extraordinary ocean views, check out the Mazagan course in the world heritage site of El Jadida, designed by Gary Player, which is rated as one of the top courses in Morocco. It’s a part of the Mazagan Beach Resort, which also offers a casino, restaurants and plenty of restaurant options.
Marrakesh is famous for its views of the High Atlas Mountains, and there are many courses to choose from, including the Montgomerie Marrakesh which has lovely unobstructed views of the snow-capped mountains as well as the famous Koutoubia Mosque.
Golf du Palais d’Agadir is a professional course – by invitation only – and one of the most exclusive golf courses in Morocco. Designed by Robert Trent Jones senior, it is meticulously manicured. Despite being right on the ocean, you can only feel it, not see it, as it is inside the Royal compound and surrounded by high walls that block the view. Nevertheless, it is very beautiful, and challenging.
Golf de Mogador just south of the ancient port town of Essaouira, is a burgeoning golf destination, soon to host 36 holes right on the edge of the Atlantic. It lies within a sprawling resort compound, and the town of Essaouira is absolutely delightful, one of the most interesting places to visit in Morocco.
